Under the Illinois Shines program those who install solar will receive SRECs (solar renewable energy certificates). For an average system of 8.4kw, the SRECs are worth more than $10,000 per household.

For homeowners, these certificates are paid as a lump sum upon installation of their system. SRECs are paid separately from the credit generated through net metering. But like any incentive, these certificates won’t last forever.
